WHY DO SOME PETS NEED REHAB?
At Bridge City Veterinary Rehabilitation, we provide veterinary rehabilitation in Saskatoon for dogs and cats recovering from injury, surgery, or living with chronic pain. We commonly treat pets with arthritis, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL/ACL) injuries and disease, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), neurological conditions, sports injuries, muscle weakness, and pets recovering from orthopedic or neurological surgery.
Every rehabilitation program is customized to your pet's specific needs and may include underwater treadmill therapy (hydrotherapy), Class IV laser therapy, veterinary acupuncture, PEMF therapy, therapeutic exercises, and hands-on rehabilitation techniques. These treatments are designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, increase strength, restore function, and help your pet return to the activities they love.
As a licensed veterinary clinic, we can also assess and manage your pet's pain by developing a comprehensive pain management plan, ensuring their rehabilitation is both safe and effective.
In addition to rehabilitation, we provide nutrition counseling and veterinary weight management. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress on painful joints and improve long-term mobility. We've helped many pets achieve their weight-loss goals and maintain a healthier, more active lifestyle.
Whether your pet is recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or living with a neurological or orthopedic condition, our team is committed to helping them move more comfortably and enjoy a better quality of life.

ARE THERE ANY PETS THAT CANNOT RECEIVE REHABILITATION THERAPIES?
Your pet's health, safety, and well-being are always our top priority. Before beginning any rehabilitation program, our veterinary team performs a thorough assessment to determine which treatments are the safest and most effective for your pet's individual condition. Every rehabilitation plan is customized, and while many pets benefit from therapies such as underwater treadmill (hydrotherapy), Class IV laser therapy, and PEMF therapy, there are situations where certain treatments may not be recommended.
Underwater treadmill therapy (hydrotherapy) may not be appropriate for pets with open wounds, contagious skin infections, severe heart or respiratory disease, vomiting or diarrhea, pets that are excessively dirty, or female dogs that are in season. In some cases, pets with a significant fear of water may need to build confidence gradually before beginning hydrotherapy.
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy is not recommended for pregnant pets. If an owner has a pacemaker or insulin pump, we simply ask that they remain outside the treatment room during the session for their own safety.
Class IV laser therapy is avoided when treating directly over the eyes, the abdomen of pregnant animals, tumors, the thyroid gland, or pediatric growth plates.
Our experienced veterinary team will carefully review your pet's medical history, perform a comprehensive examination, and discuss all available treatment options with you. If one therapy isn't appropriate, we'll recommend safe and effective alternatives to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support your pet's recovery. Our goal is always to provide the highest standard of veterinary care while ensuring your pet remains comfortable, safe, and on the best path toward a healthier, more active life.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY PET'S FIRST REHABILITATION APPOINTMENT?
Your pet's initial veterinary rehabilitation assessment typically lasts approximately one hour and includes a comprehensive examination by one of our experienced veterinarians. During this visit, we'll identify the cause of your pet's mobility challenges or pain, discuss treatment goals, and develop a personalized rehabilitation plan designed to improve their comfort, strength, and quality of life.
Here's what you can expect during your first visit:
-
A thorough medical history: We'll begin by getting to know you and your pet. We'll discuss their medical history, lifestyle, current concerns, and any changes you've noticed in their mobility, comfort, or daily activities.
-
A comprehensive rehabilitation examination: Your veterinarian will perform a detailed orthopedic, neurological, and musculoskeletal assessment to evaluate your pet's strength, gait, flexibility, range of motion, pain levels, and overall function.
-
A low-stress experience: Your pet's comfort, safety, and well-being are our highest priorities. We understand that pets experiencing pain or recovering from injury may feel anxious or vulnerable. If your pet has any behavioural concerns or requires special handling, please let us know so we can make their visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
-
Medical records and diagnostic imaging: To help us provide the most accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendations, please send any previous veterinary records, radiographs (X-rays), CT scans, MRI reports, surgical notes, or other diagnostic imaging before your appointment whenever possible.
-
Current medications and supplements: Please bring a list of any medications, supplements, or joint support products your pet is currently taking so we can develop a safe and effective pain management and rehabilitation plan.
-
Personalized treatment recommendations: Following the examination, your veterinarian will discuss the recommended rehabilitation therapies that may benefit your pet, such as underwater treadmill therapy (hydrotherapy), Class IV laser therapy, veterinary acupuncture, PEMF therapy, therapeutic exercises, nutrition counselling, or weight management.
-
Scheduling treatments: Because the initial assessment can be physically and mentally tiring for many pets, rehabilitation treatments are typically scheduled for a separate visit. If you are travelling from outside Saskatoon or a long distance, please let us know—we will do our best to accommodate your schedule.
-
Your customized home exercise program: After your appointment, you'll receive a detailed summary of your pet's examination findings, treatment recommendations, and, when appropriate, a customized home exercise program to support their recovery. Please allow up to 48 hours for this report to be completed.
