Risks Associated with Obesity in Pets

Obesity is one of the most common health conditions in pets, and it's often overlooked as a serious medical issue. Research shows that over 50% of household cats and dogs are overweight or obese. While a few extra pounds may seem harmless, even a small amount of excess weight can significantly strain the body.

At Bridge City Veterinary Rehabilitation, we see firsthand how excess weight can impact the comfort, mobility, and overall well-being of dogs and cats.

Five risks associated with obesity in pets include:

  • Joint and Mobility Issues: Extra weight puts unnecessary stress on joints, muscles, and ligaments, accelerating arthritis, injuries (like cruciate ligament disease), and spinal issues.

  • Heart and Respiratory Disease: Overweight pets are at higher risk of heart conditions and breathing difficulties, particularly during activity or in warmer weather.

  • Diabetes: Cats and dogs with excess fat tissue are more prone to developing insulin resistance and diabetes.

  • Liver Disease: In cats, especially, obesity can lead to hepatic lipidosis—a potentially fatal liver condition.

  • Reduced Quality of Life: Excess weight makes it harder for pets to play, exercise, and engage in activities they love, leading to reduced mental and physical stimulation.
